Double Drone Flutes
A double drone flute is a Native American style flute with two chambers, played with one breath. One chamber carries the melody, with the finger holes. The other holds a single steady note underneath for as long as you breathe into the flute. Each one is handmade and ships from Spain.

“Drone flute” is the most common name for this two-chamber flute. People also call it a double flute or a double drone flute. A flute with three chambers is a triple flute, which I build to order.
Multi-chambered flutes turn up in many cultures, including the clay double flutes of Mesoamerica. The wooden drone flutes I build are Native American style: inspired by the Native American flute, with a drone chamber added.
Questions about double drone flutes
What is a double drone flute?
A Native American style flute with two chambers: one for the melody, with the finger holes, and one that sounds a single steady note underneath. You play both with one breath.
Is a double drone flute hard to play?
The melody side plays just like a single Native American style flute: same fingers, same pentatonic minor scale, and nothing extra to finger for the drone. Expect to use a little more breath than on a single flute, since you’re sounding two chambers.
Is a double drone flute the same as a drone flute?
Yes. Every drone flute here is a two-chamber double flute. A flute with three chambers is called a triple flute.
Can I order a custom double drone flute?
Yes. On the custom order page you choose the key, tuning (440Hz or 432Hz), woods, carving and stone inlay.
Are double drone flutes Native American?
Multi-chambered flutes turn up in many cultures, including the clay double flutes of Mesoamerica. The wooden drone flutes I build are Native American style: inspired by the Native American flute, with a drone chamber added.
